H1B Visa stamping/interview @ Chennai

Date: March 16, 2012
Place: Chennai
Visa Type: H1B
Model : EVC
Home Address: Hyderabad
Visa Status: Approved

I have written a new blog with my H1B stamping experience at Hyderabad in January 2015 - Click Here

My interview was scheduled at 8:00 A.M and I reached consulate around 7:30 A.M. By the time I reached consulate, there was huge line and there were almost 20 people ahead of me.  Later, I realized that it was first-come, first-serve. When I went inside, was surprised to see even more people, almost 50. Going early and standing in front of consulate doesn’t make much difference.  Well, it’s all about your documentation and little luck!

At the entrance (out-side consulate) you will be given a token number. You will use this token number to get to appropriate window.

Below are the items that were allowed inside consulate.
  • Documents Folder
  • Hotel keys
  • Degree certificates.
  • Make sure you take a good copy of passport sized photograph otherwise be prepared to shell out RS 500/-.
After initial processing which includes verification of your DS-160, HDFC receipt etc., you will be asked to go to next window were they will do a finger printing/scanning. Once you are done, you will be asked to go to next building where actual interview process will take place.
After a long wait, it was my turn and went to window 24 if I remember correctly. I was surprised to see an Indian (may be ABCD??)  as Visa Officer. I thought that it would be easy in and out but that guy didn’t issue visas for bunch of people ahead of me. I don’t know what kind of visa they applied for but he gave their passports back.  It’s my turn now. Below are the questions that were asked to me.

VOà Visa Officer

VO: Need your H1-B petition.

Me: Gave him.

VO: Need your H1-B supporting documents.

Me:???????? (I don’t know what it meant and gave him I-797 stub)

VO: Sir, I need your LCA, I-129, Labor and H1B petition letter.

Me:  Gave him. (He checked each and every document carefully. Took 5-7 minutes)

VO: How did you get the job with ### (client)?

Me:  Gave him some junk but since there was a primer vendor in between my employer and client, I
mentioned his name too.

VO: Do you have client letter?

Me: Gave him.

VO:  How did you get the job with ### (Employer)?

Me: Blah blah!

VO: What's your salary?

Me: On average $#### (Later he verified with pay stubs and W2 forms.)

VO:  Need to see you pay stubs

Me: I have paystubs from last year and do you need each one of them?

VO: Last three.

Me: Gave him.

VO:  So you get paid every month?

Me: Yes

VO: Show your last 2 years W2 forms.

Me: Gave him.

VO:  Why do you have two W2 forms for year 2011?

Me:  It was generated for 2 states. My employer was not registered with the state I was working on till
May 2011. So, ADP system (Google it) generated two forms.

VO: Last 3 months bank statements?

Me: Gave him.

VO: What’s your highest degree?

Me: Told him.

VO: Major?

Me: Told him.

VO:  When did you join your employer?

Me: ##-#### date

VO:  What are all the clients that you worked for?

Me:  I have been working with the same client for past 2 years from the day I joined my employer.

That’s all and above process went for almost 15 minutes. No questions were asked based on employee
and employer relationship.

After going through all this, the only thing I suggest is documents, documents and documents.

If you need any more info, leave your questions below. Will reply them.
